Kuh-i-Lal Spinel – A Legendary Gemstone with a Rich History
Share
I’ve noticed that I rarely write about spinel, but this gemstone truly deserves attention. Especially one of its most famous varieties – Kuh-i-Lal spinel.
What is Kuh-i-Lal spinel?
Kuh-i-Lal is a vivid red spinel that has been mined for centuries in Badakhshan (modern-day Afghanistan and Tajikistan). Its name translates to “Mountain of Rubies,” which already hints at its appearance. In the past, it was often mistaken for ruby, and some of the most famous “rubies” in European royal crowns have actually turned out to be spinels from this region.
Where is it found?
The primary deposits are in the mountains of Badakhshan. This is where the legendary stones that adorned the crowns of sultans and kings originated.
Similar spinels are also found in Myanmar and Vietnam, but historically, Kuh-i-Lal refers specifically to Afghan and Tajik spinel.
What makes it unique?
Its color is a deep, rich red or pink with subtle purplish hues. Unlike rubies, spinel emits a pure glow without brown or dark undertones.
Its transparency is remarkable, with many stones featuring a crystal-clear structure that enhances their brilliance.
Its rarity makes it highly valuable, especially when it comes to large, high-quality specimens.
