February’s Birthstone

February’s Birthstone

When it comes to February, there is little debate about its birthstone—amethyst has held this position for centuries.

Astrological Significance

According to both Western and Indian astrology (Jyotish), the Sun spends most of February in the sign of Aquarius, ruled by Saturn. Amethyst is one of Saturn’s gemstones.

The Sun and Saturn are considered planetary rivals. When the Sun enters Saturn’s domain, it weakens significantly. Indian astrological texts suggest that individuals born with the Sun in Aquarius (February 13–March 13 in this tradition) may face challenges in achieving material success and often find themselves in roles that don’t fully align with their potential. However, these individuals are often drawn to spiritual practices and may excel in them. By wearing Saturn’s gemstone, amethyst, one strengthens Saturnian qualities such as restraint, introspection, patience, austerity, and emotional balance.

Medieval Beliefs About Amethyst

During the Middle Ages, amethyst was widely believed to prevent drunkenness—its name, derived from the Greek amethystos, means “not drunk.” However, its supposed virtues extended far beyond that. According to The Mirror of Precious Stones (1502, Venice), amethyst was thought to dispel negative thoughts, sharpen the intellect, and enhance clarity in business affairs. It was also believed to calm excessive emotions, benefiting both those prone to overindulgence and those suffering from unrequited love. Additionally, amethyst was considered a protective stone for soldiers, aiding in battle and ensuring victory over enemies. Hunters, too, were said to carry it for success in their pursuits.

Amethyst’s Value and Modern Perception

Before the discovery of vast Brazilian deposits in the 19th century, amethyst was more valuable than rubies, making it one of the most prized gemstones. Some modern crystal healers believe that its increased availability was symbolic—becoming accessible precisely when more people needed its grounding and spiritual properties.

Amethyst is often associated with mentorship, wisdom, and clarity. It is believed to help individuals guide their children with greater awareness and mindfulness. Known as a stone of strategic vision, it supports careful decision-making by helping one assess multiple options and choose the best path forward.

Healing Properties

Lavender Amethyst – Known for its calming effects, this variety is said to help with inflammation, irritability, aggression, and impatience. It is a perfect stone for promoting peace of mind and easing tense situations.

Sleep Aid – When people refer to amethyst’s sleep-enhancing properties, they are often speaking of lavender amethyst, which is believed to promote deep, restful sleep.

Amethyst fosters inner peace, harmony, and mindful decision-making. It helps individuals cultivate emotional stability while encouraging warmth and patience in their interactions.

Important Note

The birthstone for February is specifically purple or lavender amethyst. Green amethyst (prasiolite), discovered relatively recently, has different properties and is not considered a traditional birthstone for this month.
