Cushion Cut: Soft Shapes, Maximum Sparkle

Cushion Cut: Soft Shapes, Maximum Sparkle

The cushion cut is one of the oldest yet most beloved gemstone cuts, blending vintage charm with modern brilliance. If you love classic elegance with soft edges, but still want maximum sparkle, this cut is the perfect choice.

A Brief History

The cushion cut dates back to the 18th century, originally known as the “Old Mine Cut”. Early versions had deep pavilions, high crowns, and irregular faceting, as cutting techniques were not as refined as today. Over time, advances in gem-cutting technology led to the modern cushion cut, featuring a more balanced, symmetrical design with enhanced brilliance.

By the 19th and early 20th centuries, the cushion cut became the standard for diamonds, appearing in royal jewelry collections and high-end pieces. Today, it’s one of the top five most popular diamond shapes, accounting for around 10% of engagement ring selections worldwide.

Why Choose a Cushion Cut?

Soft, rounded corners make the stone less prone to chipping.

Holds weight well—cushion cuts retain more carat weight than round brilliants.

Brilliant sparkle, especially in modified cushion cuts with extra facets.

Larger face-up appearance—can look bigger than a round diamond of the same weight.

Potential Drawbacks

Symmetry is crucial—a poorly proportioned cushion cut can appear uneven.

Less brilliance than a round cut, depending on the faceting pattern.

Hidden weight—a deep pavilion can make the stone appear smaller from the top.

 Why I Love Cushion Cuts

For me, the cushion cut is one of the most versatile and sophisticated shapes. It combines the fire and brilliance of a round diamond with the elegance of a princess cut, but with softer, more romantic curves.

The right cushion cut can even outshine other shapes, thanks to its unique light reflection and facet arrangement. Whether set in a classic solitaire or a vintage-inspired halo, a cushion cut always looks luxurious and timeless.

If I had to choose between an elongated oval or a slightly imperfect cushion cut, I’d go with the latter—because for me, proportions and brilliance matter more than sheer size!
