Black Stones: Better and Cheaper Than Black Diamonds
Share
Black gemstones have always carried an aura of mystery and power. Worn by sorcerers, kings, and warriors, they symbolize secrecy, authority, and protection. No wonder they are often associated with mystical properties.
When people think of black gemstones, the first thing that comes to mind is the black diamond. But is it worth the price? While striking in appearance, it’s essentially a graphitized diamond with significantly less brilliance than a colorless one.
Price: $300–$3,000 per carat, depending on quality, cut, and origin.
A perfect alternative? Black spinel. Visually indistinguishable from a black diamond, but:
✔ Costs $100–$400 per carat, depending on color, size, and clarity
✔ Has a natural, deep black color
✔ Offers an excellent luster
Personally, I love black gemstones, and if I had to choose, I’d go for spinel. Black diamonds are overrated, while spinel is an honest, beautiful, and affordable choice.

But spinel isn’t the only stunning black gemstone worth considering.
Black tourmaline – The stone of magicians
A powerful energy shield, black tourmaline is known for its protective qualities. It absorbs negative energy and creates a barrier against harmful influences. A favorite among spiritual practitioners, it’s often used for grounding and emotional stability. Price: Even in the best quality and custom-cut, $20–$40 per carat.
Black opal – A gem full of mystery
Unlike most black gemstones, black opal isn’t just dark—it has mesmerizing flashes of color, making it one of the most unique and sought-after opals. The interplay of fiery reds, deep blues, and electric greens against a dark background creates a hypnotic effect. This gemstone is believed to enhance intuition and bring deep emotional healing.
Price: $30–$50 per carat.
If you love the deep elegance of black gemstones but don’t want to overspend on black diamonds, consider these stunning alternatives. Which one is your favorite?
